I don’t remember hearing about this beforehand, so Nintendo sneakily dropped a Museum Direct on us a little while ago. It didn’t have anything to do with new games or consoles, so if you missed it, don’t worry. It was a thirteen-minute presentation where Miyamoto-san showed us around different parts of a museum that Nintendo is opening up in Kyoto, Japan, later this year on October 2nd.
The tour started on the second floor, with exhibits relating to Nintendo’s past. Some things on display are from before they were a video game company, back when they made playing cards and many other toys. But, as you can expect, the most substantial displays are for their work in video games. They have displays for nearly every console, including the Japanese and International versions. There is an exhibit showing off the evolution of the Super Mario Bros. series and how its graphics changed over time, as well as one for The Legend of Zelda, which, unfortunately, they didn’t show in the video.
Downstairs are a lot of interactive exhibits, such as a massive card game projected on the floor that museum-goers can participate in. There are exhibits made up to look like old rooms with playable versions of some older Nintendo toys. And finally, there are massive recreations of the NES, SNES, N64, and Wii game controllers that you can use to play games with. They’re so big they require two people to play properly. I’d love to get some of these for my house!
The Nintendo Museum looks like a place I would have loved to visit as a kid. Who am I kidding? I’d still love to go as an adult. One of these days, if I ever make my way out to Japan, which I have wanted to do for a while, I will most certainly have it on my list of places to visit. What did you think of the Nintendo Museum, and would you go if you had the chance?
